Mothering Teens Is Hell

Will I survive my last year as Mom of a teen?

My 3 children

I’d love to just flat out murder whoever advised me to have three teenagers at the same time. As I look back on my life, I will openly and publicly admit that the ten years I’ve spent mothering three teenagers were the hardest in my life.

My three had two entrepreneurial parents. Neither of us held 9-to-5 jobs as parents, so the structure in our household was less than perfect. Structure-less kids wreak havoc on society, as well as on themselves.

Basic arithmetic says the three will overcome two. Two parents can easily handle two kids. But throw in that third, and the kids will win every time. Add that fact that all three are over six feet . . .

Hormones. God help me. I went broke just on acne remedies. And the attitudes? We won’t go there.

Brushes with the law. Car accidents and the principal calling. Finding beer cans and reading girls’ texts? Please.

Shoes. The stench of teenage tennis shoes devalues a home like no other. You’ll often see restrictions on rental property that call for “No Smokers” – the same should apply to families with teens.

My youngest turns 19 today. It marks my last year as a mom of teens. As I type I wonder where all the years went. I think about all the things I’d like to re-do, do differently. I wish I had an opportunity to have just one more family vacation like we used to have, when they chose to be with Mom and Dad instead of with their friends.

Yep, teenage years are hell. There’s no two ways about it. But once it’s all over, you forget the hard times. You just wish you could hang on to them just a little bit longer.
